A battle continues to escalate in America over the use of preferred pronouns, as teachers and other employees find themselves reprimanded or dismissed, a conflict that will unquestionably receive its final answer via the United States Supreme Court.
At least three cases are pending that could go before the Supreme Court and set a precedent for how gender identity and preferred pronouns must be handled under the law.
Ultimately, the courts will have to determine if gender identity, which cannot be measured scientifically and is not evidence-based, will be given preference over those individuals who prefer to believe what both science and religion agree upon – that there are only two genders.
If the courts find in favor of gender identity, then anyone who disagrees could find themselves having to contradict their own core beliefs in order to maintain employment.
Although it doesn’t happen often, both science and religion are in complete agreement when it comes to gender.
Long ago, science established sex and gender to be the same. If you are born with XX chromosomes, you are the homogametic sex or female. If you are born with XY chromosomes, you are the heterogametic sex or male.
The religious viewpoint is exactly the same: “Male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).
Psychologists, however, are leading the way in promoting the concept that sex at birth and gender identity are two different things. Many people are leaning on psychology as “science” that proves there are a number of different genders.
But first, we must step back and take a look at psychology as a science. While psychology applies the application of scientific methods in conducting research and operates on the scientific mindset, psychology itself is not a real science.
Psychology is largely rooted in theories. It is also made up of elements of philosophy.
What psychologists’ study cannot always be measured definitively. Further, psychology lacks the hard and solid laws that are the backbone of science.
Now that we understand how psychology isn’t exactly science, it is easier to understand how gender identity is indeed a theoretical construct that seeks to assert that gender goes beyond biology, yet lacks any hard evidence to establish this as fact.
Psychologists seek to prove that gender identity is an inner sense that exists apart from physical anatomy. This goal has produced terms such as “sex assigned at birth” and the concept that one can change their gender based on their feelings of inner gender identity.
Doctors and psychologists that support this concept also say there is no genetic test that can determine gender identity.
They say that a mix of genes, chemicals, and other factors offer a contribution, but how all of these come together to form gender identity is not understood.
In the end, what we have is the viewpoint of one group of people at odds with another. Those advocating the rights of those who support gender identity, with no factual evidence or hard science (only soft science at best) to prove their position, insist that their rights must be observed over those who hold their gender beliefs based on proven science.
Thus far, political correctness has been winning the battle, ahead of science and religious beliefs, and it has cost many teachers and others their jobs.
One can only hope that the Supreme Court will ultimately decide with fairness and true scientific fact in a decision that will settle this matter definitively.
