Following Major League Baseball’s decision to move the All-Star Game from Atlanta to Denver, the American Conservative Union (ACU) is calling on the league to bring it back to the Peach State.

ACU leader Matt Schlapp wrote a letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred criticizing the decision, claiming the league “went broke for wokeism.”

ACU Asks MLB Commissioner to Bring the All-Star Game Back to Atlanta

For those who don’t remember, the MLB decided to move the All-Star Game out of Atlanta following the passing of Georgia’s new election law, which many believe will make it more difficult for people of color to vote.

“Throughout our nation’s history, there have been some who have sought to end the American experiment in democratic self-government. Whether motivated by socialist, fascist, or other illiberal authoritarian impulses, these radicals despise the virtues upon which free people can live in harmony. And you have played into their hands,” the letter wrote.

“Your comments regarding the improvements to the Georgia election law are baseless and contrary to reality. Worse, your misguided comments and actions have harmed the good people of Atlanta, especially the African American community.”

ACU Claims Moving the Game Will Cost Georgia $100 Million

The letter went on to explain the decision to move the game out of Georgia cost the state roughly $100 million.

“We ask that you meet with us to discuss this matter. To continue pushing unpopular policies that harm future elections will only threaten the very future of Major League Baseball.”

Under this new law, Georgia voters would be required to have a voter ID for absentee voting, rather than being able to verify their information using signature matching. It also limits the ballot drop boxes to just one per county (or per 100,000 voters) and prevents groups from passing out food and water to people waiting in line.

Manfred Moved the Game One Day After the Start of the 2021 Season

Manfred made the announcement to move the game out of Atlanta just one day after the 2021 season began.

“Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with Clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and the Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views,” Manfred shared at the time.

“I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft.”

He continued, “Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box. Fair access to voting continues to have our game’s unwavering support.”
